Welcome to the first chapter of Shishukunj Model United Nations. My name is Mohammed Alavi and Ill be chairing the Special Political and Decolonization Committee. Im a fun loving person and experience delight in watching Bollywood movies. I have a penchant for travelling and it has always been my dream to go on a world tour. My passion for MUNs bloomed after I attended my second MUN. MUN is not just a place where one simply comes to attain the title of the best delegate but it is a place where we learn, make friends and yes, actually interact. I know it would be a bit difficult for the first timers but believe me, every time I attend a conference, Im as nervous as I was in my very first conference! But this nervousness is soon overpowered by the feeling of excitement.
The agenda of this committee will be the territorial dispute in the East China Sea. It is quite complex and I'm sure that by working together well resolve this issue.
Now, as your chairperson, I have a few expectations. Come prepared with ample amount of research and act in a dignified manner because after all well be debating in the United Nations. Respect is a key element in the committee, so respect your fellow delegates and in turn, theyll respect you. Use appropriate language not only in the committee but also outside it. This is to facilitate a free flowing and conductive debate atmosphere from our end.

Ever since World War II, The Senkaku Islands, as they are known in Japan, or the Diaoyu Islands, as they are known in the Peoples Republic of China have been a source of conflict in the East China Sea. In recent history, this has been and remains a provoking topic due to the rise of China in the economic, political, and military spheres.
Economically, these islands and the marine area surrounding these islands, the exclusive economic zone, are a rich resource for oil and fishing, and could be very profitable for the Chinese economy if they were procured under Chinese sovereignty. Politically and militarily, these islands generate considerable tension. China has put in place an Air Defense Identification Zone which poses an immediate threat to Japan, and could be seen as an attempt to assert dominance over the territory. In doing so, the United States have entered into situation as Japans ally to try to ease tensions. In this years edition of Specpol we convene to perhaps find a long standing solution to problem that has not only been neglected but also has been a source of intense tension.
